A series of wildfires swept through the island of Maui and its historic Lahaina town in Hawaii in early August. However, the never-ending revelations about authorities’ questionable and poor decisions during the incident continue to unfold. Herman Andaya, now the former chief of Maui’s Emergency Management Agency, decided not to activate warning sirens during the wildfires. He claimed that doing so would have caused more confusion and wouldn’t have saved anyone. Moreover, children were left at home without their parents after power cuts on the island closed the schools – contributing to a large number of juvenile casualties. Meanwhile, those who dodged the barricades and sought refuge in the ocean survived. (Related: Island police announce launch of arson investigation: “Climate change” propagandist may have started fires in Hawaii.) Following the poor decisions that led to more casualties during the wildfires, reports have emerged that authorities are turning away residents that arrive with much-needed supplies like generators and water. Survivors who receive water provided by the state government get sick after drinking. Hawaiian Electric, which promised to invest in preventive measures after the 2019 wildfires, still lacks preparedness. The local utility company obsessively focused on renewable energy while spending a mere $245,000 on wildfire safety over the four-year period between 2019 and 2023. Furthermore, M. Kaleo Manuel – an official at the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) – refused to release water for the West Maui fire. The deputy director for the DLNR’s  Commission on Water Resource Management believed in water equity and reverence for water as a privilege rather than a resource. A Maui resident says they were winning against the fires “until the water shut off.” Real estate developers taking advantage of the tragic incident in Maui Hawaii Gov. Josh Green has been vocal about his intention to prevent opportunistic land acquisitions by foreign entities and ensure that the recovery and redevelopment process prioritizes the interests of Hawaii’s people. “We don’t want this to become a clear space for overseas interests to exploit. The state will take the lead in preserving it first,” he said during a press conference. The Aloha State’s governor stressed the need to prevent exploitation and land theft: “You will be pretty poorly informed if you try to steal land from our people and then build here.” Despite the clear stance, reports have emerged of developers reaching out to residents about acquiring land owned by families for generations. They have exploited the situation by purchasing land from desperate homeowners. The fear is that without swift insurance payouts and adequate government aid, survivors might be compelled to sell to deep-pocketed buyers. These external parties could then rapidly gentrify neighborhoods and alter the character of the island. Long-time Maui resident John Dimuro expressed his neighbors’ collective sentiment: “The government should just say ‘No, you’re not allowed to develop.’ Say no, just flat-out no.” Jonah Lion, who runs an eco-cultural tourism company, affirmed the resolve of many islanders. He stressed: “No matter how much money you offer – no, we’re not selling. This is not for sale.” Sterling Higa, executive director of the nonprofit Housing Hawaii’s Future, outlined the potential challenges that await affected residents. “The real danger is all of this compensation to rebuild, if it comes at a later time, doesn’t necessarily cover the interim cost of rent,” he explained. “Many of us are concerned that in the immediate wake of a disaster, people are not always in the right state of mind to make such a consequential decision.” Visit Disaster.news for more stories about the wildfires in Hawaii. Maui wildfires continue to expose government’s FAILURES and QUESTIONABLE decisions A series of wildfires swept through the island of Maui and its historic Lahaina town in Hawaii in early August.…

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has vowed to kick-start a probe into President Joe Biden’s response to the wildfires that ravaged the town of Lahaina, located in the western portion of Hawaii’s Maui island. His promise to investigate the chief executive’s response followed the disaster that has killed more than 110, with more than 1,000 individuals missing. The house speaker said during an Aug. 23 appearance in New York that he is very concerned about the response. “We still have hundreds of individuals that are missing. I think there’s [going to] have to be a congressional investigation in response [to] what happened. How could we lose that many Americans in today’s age? And the federal response seems very delayed.” McCarthy also rebuked Biden for his initial refusal to comment on the disaster, alongside his delay in visiting the ground zero of the devastation. The president, while on vacation in his home state of Delaware, remarked “no comment” when a reporter asked him about the Lahaina wildfires. “The president’s response – to have no comment? That’s unacceptable,” the speaker remarked. “So I’m going to work with committees too to look at investigating what went on so that never happens again as well.” Meanwhile, the first couple visited Maui on Aug. 21 amid growing criticism over Washington’s perceived lack of support. The Bidens were met with mixed reactions during their visit. The presidential motorcade drove past disgruntled residents booing and jeering. Some took it a step further, giving the motorcade the middle finger and waving Trump 2024 flags. During his speech, Biden promised survivors of the wildfire that the federal government would support them “as long as it takes.” He continued: “The country grieves with you [and] stands with you, and we’ll do everything possible to help you recover, rebuild, and respect culture and traditions when the rebuilding takes place.” GOP reps: Biden visit to Lahaina “predictable” and “cringeworthy” The tourist town of Lahaina – home to 12,000 – was almost wiped off the map. Over 3,000 structures were turned to ash, with the estimated damage amounting to $5 billion. While no single cause has been determined for the fires as of writing, experts suggest power lines that weren’t shut off despite high winds may have caught fire when they fell. At least two of McCarthy’s colleagues in the GOP expressed disgust over Biden’s response to the Maui disaster. During an Aug. 22 appearance on Fox Business, South Carolina Rep. Russell Fry rebuked the president’s visit. “The ‘American last’ policies of the Biden administration were on full display,” he told the network’s Cheryl Casone. “I mean, it was the most cringeworthy visit of a disaster area that I’ve ever seen.” “I think it’s inexcusable, the conduct of this administration. Quite frankly, the people of Maui and this country deserve better than what they’re receiving right now.” Even House Majority Whip Tom Emmer from Minnesota blasted the president’s blunders at the disaster’s ground zero in a statement to Breitbart News. “Biden blundering in times of crisis is as predictable as a snowy Minnesota winter: it’s inevitable,” he wrote. “If his presidency has taught us anything, it’s to not hold your breath for competent leadership from this White House.” The Minnesota congressman referenced various gaffes by the incumbent while visiting Lahaina. Foremost among them is Biden’s downplaying of the suffering experienced by residents as he compared the wildfires to a small kitchen fire. He also insensitively joked about the “hot ground” at Lahaina while touring the town. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has vowed to crack down on retail theft after a series of violent flash mob robberies targeted luxury goods stores in the city in broad daylight. LAPD Deputy Chief Blake Chow told reporters on Aug. 17: “The LAPD will not tolerate these acts. We will not stand by idly while these acts continue.” LA Mayor Karen Bass said on the same day that law enforcement agencies across LA County were joining forces to establish a task force aimed at stamping out retail theft. She promised: “If someone commits a crime, we’ll catch [them and prosecute them to the] fullest extent of the law.” The announcement of the task force came a day after retail thieves targeted a Gucci store in LA on Aug. 16. The group of 10 brazenly plundered the store in broad daylight, making off with handbags worth $100,000. Earlier on Aug. 12, dozens of people looted a Nordstrom in LA’s San Fernando Valley and made off with $300,000 of goods. High-end stores throughout the City of Angels have been targeted by masked groups who smash through display boxes and grab designer clothes and bags. Video clips posted on social media shows mobs of up to 50 people rampaging through upscale retailers, breaking glass and yanking away goods attached by security cables. Often, the raids happen in full view of other shoppers too stunned to intervene. Clerks and security guards, meanwhile, are seemingly powerless to prevent them. The video clips of the brazen robberies are cited by conservatives to support their argument that blue cities have an out-of-control crime problem. Robbery statistics in the area are mixed. The LAPD figures noted a decline in the year-to-date number compared to 2022. However, the LA County Sheriff’s Department showed a different number. It recorded an uptick in robberies during the first six months of 2023. Rapper 50 Cent says “LA is finished” because of retail theft Curtis Jackson, known by his moniker 50 Cent, put in his two cents about the Aug. 12 Nordstrom robbery in an Instagram post. He warned that the City of Angels is “finished” due to the rampant retail theft there. “I told you LA was finished,” he wrote. “They are [going to] have to lock the doors, appointment only.” The post from the rapper of “In Da Club” had a screenshot of a news report by KTLA 5 about the incident. This was not the first time the rap artist criticized LA’s situation on Instagram. Back in July, he pointed out that the city’s reinstatement of a zero-bail policy would further its collapse. 50 Cent wrote: “LA is finished. Watch how bad it gets out there.” (Related: Rapper 50 Cent says LA is FINISHED after reinstatement of zero-bail policy.) Under the policy, LAPD officers cannot detain suspects accused of misdemeanor crimes. This also extends to theft, shoplifting, drug use, vandalism, battery and other nonviolent crimes. Moreover, those currently in jail on such charges would also be set free. But a suspect violating the zero-bail schedule is immediately put back in jail on a cash bail system. This was not the first time the City of Angels implemented such a policy. During the height of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, LA put the zero-bail policy in place to reduce crowding in jails and curb the spread of COVID-19. LA officials ended the policy in September 2022 as the COVID-19 pandemic waned. However, it was reinstated in May 2023 after LA County Superior Court Judge Lawrence Riff sided with a group of activists who sued the county. The plaintiffs claimed that they had suffered under the cash bail system. Riff’s ruling may have played a part in the proliferation of smash-and-grab crimes in LA, as the culprits no longer fear jail time. Recently released graphic body camera footage showed a 37-year-old gunman open firing on Fargo police, killing a rookie cop who’d only been on the job for three months and critically injuring two others. The gunman was shot dead by 32-year-old Officer Zach Robinson, ending the nearly two-minute assault. On July 14, Mohamad Barakat, a Syrian asylum seeker, parked his car in Fargo, North Dakota, near two vehicles that crashed on a busy road. When the cops arrived to respond to the crash, he seized his moment, opening fire. The police said that Barakat was armed with 1800 rounds of ammunition, multiple firearms, tactical gear, a grenade, three canisters of gasoline and two propane tanks filled with Tannerite, which is a highly explosive material. He had enough explosives to obliterate a crowd in what would have been a catastrophic domestic terrorist attack had it not been thwarted. We’ve got three officers down. Send everybody.” Wallin was shot first. He was taking his weapon out of its holster and was a nanosecond away from firing his own gun when he was fatally injured. Dotas was then hit with multiple rounds and struggled to his feet at one point but went back down, North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley said during a press conference where the state officials released Robinson’s bodycam footage. Hawes also was hit multiple times, shot through his right arm, and unable to stand up to walk, but crawled to Dotas’ side, “to be at his side, to be holding his hand, to be calling his name, to be willing him to live,” Wrigley said. The July 14 dated video showed the three officers lying motionless on the ground as Robinson nears Barakat’s vehicle. Barakat also shot a woman fleeing the scene before he was exterminated by Robinson, who shot Barakat 31 times in total. The gunman somehow survived the majority of the shots and continued to reach for his weapon before eventually being taken out. According to an X post of @KanekoaTheGreat, authorities believe Barakat’s ambush was the prelude to a larger attack that day, with a potential target of the Downtown Fargo Street Fair attended by thousands. The day before the shooting, he Googled “area events where there are crowds” which led him to an article about the Downtown Fargo Street Fair, which was taking place on the same day. His search history also included “explosive ammo,” “incendiary rounds” and “mass shooting events.” Barakat moved to the U.S. in 2012 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2019. Before the incident, his only crime or infraction was a speeding ticket. The shooting investigation remains active and is “proceeding to its logical conclusion,” Wrigley said. A news-worthy incident that received crickets from MSM How could such a harrowing incident be missed by mainstream media? People are wondering why they didn’t hear about the ambush and subsequent shooting of Barakat when it took place. “Unreal,” said Frontlines reporter Kalen D’Almeida. “Evidently, a month ago there was a Syrian terrorist in Fargo, North Dakota shooting cops. Wild that there isn’t anyone involved in MSM coming forward about being roadblocked from reporting on this story. Why is that?” Wild that there isn’t anyone involved in MSM coming forward about being roadblocked from reporting on this story. Why is that? — Kalen D’Almeida (@fromkalen) August 18, 2023 If not for the press conference, the dramatic video of the shooting would not have been released when the gunman’s behavior had already caught the attention of authorities in the past. In a report provided to the Associated Press by the City of Fargo Fire Department, Battalion Chief Jason Ness noted what appeared to be “a significant amount of gun ammunition,” “multiple ‘assault style’ rifles,” a 20-pound propane cylinder in a bedroom, a second smaller propane cylinder in the kitchen, and “a funnel, blender and other items that looked to be for measuring purposes,” according to the outlet. The police were notified, but all the guns were determined to be legally owned. And last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Fargo Police Department revealed that the intel agency had “received an anonymous tip about Barakat in July 2021 in which concerns were expressed about his mental state, that he had access to a ‘significant number of firearms’ and that he had used threatening language,” AP reported. When the Fargo police visited Barakat, he “denied any ill-intentions.” According to Wrigley, there was a ‘suggestion’ the gunman may have been on an FBI Guardian list but the FBI has not yet confirmed that he was on it. Data coming out of Europe shows that business activity this month has contracted to its lowest level since November 2020. In the Eurozone – the parts of the continent that currently use the euro as its main legal currency – the HCOB Flash Eurozone composite purchasing managers’ index (PMI) fell to 47.0 in August from 48.6 in July, its weakest level in 33 months. A PMI is a comprehensive index attempting to measure the prevailing direction of economic trends in certain economic sectors. The quoted flash composite PMI is focused on the eurozone’s manufacturing and services sectors. (Related: Conservative German party brands EU a “failed project,” calls for its complete overhaul as a federation of autonomous nations.) A reading of 50 or above would have marked an expansion in economic activity, while a reading below last month’s 48.6 would have signaled a contraction in the continent’s economy. Some economists were hoping for a very modest increase to 48.8 for August. The recent PMI would be the lowest reading since April 2013 if the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic months were excluded. Cyrus de la Rubia, chief economist for the Hamburg Commercial Bank in northern Germany, said the eurozone’s service sector is “unfortunately showing signs of turning down to match the poor performance of manufacturing.” The services PMI dropped to a 30-month low at 48.3, while the manufacturing PMI only rose slightly from 42.7 in July to 43.7 in August – nowhere near enough to prevent the eurozone from entering a recession. “Considering the PMI figures in our GDP [growth] nowcast leads us to the conclusion that the eurozone will shrink by 0.2 percent in the third quarter,” predicted de la Rubia. “The downward pressure on the economy of the eurozone in August stems mainly from the German service sector, which switched from growth to contraction at an unusual pace,” de la Rubia added, noting that reduced output in German manufacturing also added to arguments that the country is becoming “the sick man of Europe.” Euro, British pound falling in value Following the release of the eurozone composite PMI, the euro responded by losing approximately 0.3 percent of its value compared to the United States dollar, trading at a low of $1.0809. Across the English Channel, the United Kingdom pound similarly experienced a dip, falling by 0.8 percent in value to $1.2636. These values represent a more than one-month low for the euro and a two-month low for the pound. Furthermore, the worse-than-expected readings have made financial analysts predict that both the Bank of England and the European Central Bank (ECB) may respond with less aggressive interest rate increases. “The continuing sharp drop in the PMI data will test the ECB’s growth optimism,” said Mark Wall, chief European economist at Deutsche Bank. “Ongoing manufacturing weakness might be more than just cyclical. It could reveal a more persistent and structural competitive shock.” “The weakening in services might reveal that monetary transmission is stronger than the hawks were expecting,” he continued. “We are expecting the ECB to pause [rate increases] in September, but it is not clear that inflation is where the ECB wants it yet. A pause should not be misinterpreted as the peak.” Back in July, ECB President Christine Lagarde herself noted that, for August, the central bank would either raise rates or pause rate hikes. No discussions were done considering decreasing interest rates. “We continue to expect services inflation to ease enough over the coming months to convince the ECB to not hike past September,” said Melanie Debono, senior Europe economist for economic research firm Pantheon Macroeconomics. “Stagnating employment combined with decreasing production and results therefore in lower output per head,” said de la Rubia. “As a result, the ECB may be more reluctant to pause the hiking cycle in September.” Current predictions suggest that ECB rates will remain unchanged next month at 3.75 percent. Russian officials claimed that private military company Wagner Group founder and chief Yevgeny Prigozhin is dead as he was one of 10 passengers aboard a plane that crashed in a field around 200 miles north of Moscow. Russia’s civil aviation agency, the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia), published a list of the 10 people on board a plane flying from Moscow to Saint Petersburg on Aug. 23. This plane, described as a private business jet, crashed near the village of Kuzhenkino in the Tver Oblast, around the halfway point between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Video footage spreading on Russian news outlets and social media confirms that an aircraft was seen plummeting to the ground in Tver Oblast. The Rosaviatsia’s list includes three crew members onboard the plane. Other Russian authorities claim that eight bodies have already been recovered from the wreckage. It is not clear if Prigozhin’s body has been identified. (Related: Top Russian astronomer mysteriously ends up in hospital after FAILED moon mission.) Other reported passengers on the plane are Dmitry Utkin, the head of Wagner’s military operations, and Valery Chekalov, the head of Wagner’s security services. Two Wagner veteran officers and two of Prigozhin’s bodyguards were also among the listed passengers. The plane’s pilot, co-pilot and flight attendant also died in the crash. While Prigozhin’s death is still unconfirmed, both Russian state media as well as Telegram channels affiliated with Wagner have reported his death. Russian federal authorities have announced an investigation into the plane crash and have suggested that the plane carrying Prigozhin may have violated air safety rules. Wagner claims jet carrying Prigozhin was shot down by Russia The plane crash has immediately fueled suspicions regarding possible Kremlin involvement in the crash since the long-term fate of the Wagner founder has been the subject of intense speculation since his short-lived mutiny. In fact, pro-Wagner sources are already claiming that the plane was shot down by Russian air defenses. Videos shared on pro-Wagner Telegram channels claim to prove that the plane carrying Prigozhin was shot down because the plane immediately dropped from a large cloud of smoke – a kind of freefall that can occur when an aircraft sustains severe damage. Frame-by-frame analysis by the Associated Press supports the theory that the plane suffered some kind of explosion mid-flight. Other sources claim to have footage showing a Russian missile striking the aircraft carrying Prigozhin, with one supposed insider source claiming that Russian air defenses shot two S-300 missiles at the aircraft. Furthermore, Russian sources claim that a second Wagner Group-owned private business jet departed Moscow at around the same time the plane that crashed took off but then turned around and landed back in Moscow around the time of the incident. The existence of this second jet has fueled speculation that Prigozhin may still be alive and that the plane crash was a ruse for him to escape into exile. “The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) and the Kremlin have been destroying the Wagner private military company and weakening Prigozhin’s authority since the rebellion,” noted the military-focused think tank the Institute for the Study of War in one of its latest assessments of the ongoing conflicts in Russia and Ukraine. “Prigozhin was likely attempting to counter the Russian MoD’s and the Kremlin’s destruction of Wagner,” the think tank continued. “The assassination of Wagner’s top leadership was likely the final step to eliminate Wagner as an independent organization… Wagner PMC’s future without a leader remains uncertain.” “No matter what caused the plane crash, everyone will see it as an act of vengeance and retribution [by the Kremlin, and] the Kremlin wouldn’t really stand in the way of that [view],” noted political analyst Tatiana Stanovaya, a senior fellow for the think tank the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center. “From Putin’s point of view, as well as the security forces and the military – Prigozhin’s death must be a lesson to any potential followers,” she continued. Stanovaya does not believe there will be much outcry from the Russian public over Prigozhin’s death, and that those who supported him will likely be “more scared than inspired to protest.” Learn the latest developments within Russia at RussiaReport.news.
